Turkish Citizenship

Immigration and Citizenship Law

Turkish citizenship is an important status that allows a foreigner to establish a permanent legal bond with Türkiye. For foreigners who want to live, invest, start a family or build a long-term life in Türkiye, acquiring citizenship has important legal consequences.

Turkish Citizenship Applications and Ways to Acquire Citizenship

Acquiring Turkish citizenship is more than just submitting an application. The legal ground on which the application is based, whether the necessary requirements are met, the accuracy of the documents and the assessment by the administrative authorities should all be considered together.

In citizenship applications, the person’s current legal situation, history of living in Türkiye, family ties, financial situation and the basis of the application are important. For this reason, each application should be assessed on its own particular facts.

How Is Turkish Citizenship Acquired?

Turkish citizenship can be acquired in different legal ways. A person may acquire citizenship by birth, obtain it later by application, or benefit from citizenship routes that depend on special conditions.

In the case of citizenship acquired later in life, what becomes important is the person’s legal connection with Türkiye, whether they meet the requirements set out in the legislation and the ground on which the application is based.

The procedure that applies to a citizenship application may vary depending on the person’s situation. For this reason, it is important to identify the right legal route before applying.

Acquiring Turkish Citizenship Through the General Procedure

Foreigners may acquire Turkish citizenship through the general application procedure (genel yolla vatandaşlık) if they fulfil certain requirements.

In this process, various criteria are assessed, such as the length of the person’s residence in Türkiye, their intention to settle, their ability to support themselves, their knowledge of Turkish, their good moral character and the absence of any circumstance that would pose an obstacle in terms of national security.

The acceptance of an application does not depend solely on handing in documents. During the assessment by the administrative authorities, the person’s overall situation is examined.

Turkish Citizenship by Investment

Türkiye is among the countries that offer foreign investors who meet certain requirements the possibility of acquiring citizenship.

Under citizenship by investment, an application can be made on the basis of acquiring real estate, a capital investment or other types of investment set out in the legislation.

However, making an investment does not by itself mean that citizenship is acquired automatically. The investment requirements must be met in accordance with the legislation, the necessary documents must be prepared and the application process must be handled correctly.

In applications for citizenship through real estate in particular, the nature of the property, the date of acquisition, the official records and the other legal requirements should be examined carefully.

Turkish Citizenship Through Marriage

Foreigners who marry a Turkish citizen may apply for citizenship if they meet certain requirements.

In the process of acquiring citizenship through marriage, the existence of an official marriage is not enough on its own. It is assessed whether the marriage is based on a genuine family union and whether the other requirements set by law are met.

In this process, whether the family life is genuine, whether the couple live together and the applicant’s legal history are among the important factors.

How Does the Turkish Citizenship Application Process Work?

A citizenship application starts with preparing the documents that fit the person’s situation and submitting them to the competent authorities.

During the application, documents relating to identity details, marital status, residence history, financial situation and the basis of the citizenship request are assessed.

After the application, the administrative review begins. At this stage, the necessary inquiries may be made and it is assessed whether the applicant meets the requirements.

Giving incomplete or incorrect information in citizenship procedures may lead to the application being refused or to legal problems later on.

The Importance of Documents in Citizenship Applications

The documents submitted form the basis of a Turkish citizenship application.

Identity documents, passport records, civil status documents, residence details, investment documents and the other papers required for the type of application must be prepared correctly.

Missing documents, incorrect information or inconsistencies with official records may have a negative effect on the application process.

Refusal of a Citizenship Application

Turkish citizenship applications may be refused for various reasons. These may include not meeting the application requirements, submitting incomplete documents, or the applicant not being found suitable following the administrative assessment.

If a refusal decision is received, the reasons for it and its legal basis should be examined.

Depending on the particular facts of the case, it may be possible to consider administrative remedies or court proceedings.

Annulment and Deprivation of Citizenship

After Turkish citizenship has been acquired, the annulment of citizenship (vatandaşlığın iptali) or deprivation of citizenship (vatandaşlığın kaybettirilmesi) may come into question in some cases.

Legal consequences may arise in particular where false information or documents were used when citizenship was acquired.

For this reason, what matters is not only the acquisition stage of the citizenship application but also legal security afterwards.

Life Planning in Türkiye and Citizenship

For many foreigners, the citizenship process is part of a long-term plan for life in Türkiye.

Real estate investment, family reunification, working life and commercial activities may have legal consequences connected with the citizenship process.

For this reason, citizenship applications should be assessed not as a single transaction but as part of the person’s overall legal situation in Türkiye.

Citizenship law is a technical field connected with the law on foreigners, administrative law, family law and investment procedures.

Since each applicant’s route to citizenship, personal circumstances and legal history are different, a standard approach to the application may not always be sufficient.

A sound legal assessment helps to prepare the application by the appropriate method, identify possible risks in advance and conduct the process more securely.

Legal planning in the process of acquiring Turkish citizenship is important for protecting the applicant’s rights and ensuring that the process proceeds in accordance with the legislation.
